Kala Baritone Ukulele

Kala KA-MK-B Makala Baritone is simply the best entry-level ukulele in the market. I really impressed with the sound, playability, look and overall quality of my Kala "Makala" MK-B Baritone ukulele. The Makala series are the entry level Kala Ukuleles, but they are far from the "toy-like" entry-level offerings of many other uke companies.

The workmanship of the product is well made, and is a good value for the low to medium cost. I do have a little advice when tuning your instrument, however... If you've never tuned a baritone ukulele before, don't use the tuning guide that comes with the product, as that is for a soprano ukulele. I broke the string on the baritone ukulele because I was trying to follow the notes the directions gave, not realizing it was directions for a soprano ukulele. Thus when I was trying to make the strings tighter I broke the first one. (Thankfully a nearby music store replaced the string.) The strings for a baritone ukulele should be tuned to these notes: D, G. B, and E. These are the first 4 notes on the top strings of a guitar. By learning 3 simple chords there are dozens of songs you can sing and accompany to -- from folk, country western, pop, spiritual, and of course hawaian. We had so much fun playing them that we had to buy two of them for our household.

I have friend who skillful to play the Ukulele instrument. I always amazed when I listen her Ukulele game. His name is Kevin Holmes. Mr. Kevin Holmes use the baritone ukulele from Kala. When I asked why he choose the Kala's ukulele, his answer is quite simple. He feels so match with the Kala instruments.

Below are his opinion about the Kala KA-MK-B Makala
"This is a well-made, great-looking and great-sounding baritone ukulele. The standard tuning is the same as the first (top) 4 strings of a full-sized guitar in standard tuning: DGBE. I retuned mine to DGBD which is the same as open G tuning on a 5-string banjo (without the 5th string) because I'm more familiar with that tuning. I should have bought the carry bag with it at the same time, since I ended up buying it later anyway." He said

In order, he also give a suggestion about the product

"The only issue I had with this uke was with the strings (which is why I only rated this 4-stars instead of 5). The 4th & 5th strings are wire-wound, which is not unusual, but these particular ones are VERY dead feeling and sounding compared to other wire-wound strings and the 1st & second strings on the uke, which are black nylon. This makes the upper and lower strings contrast in quality quite a bit. The lower strings did improve in sound over time with playing, but I will be replacing all the strings with nylon soon."
